History and Heritage

The Township of North Kawartha supports community efforts to retain cultural heritage and promote pride of place and facilitates the protection and preservation of the history and heritage within the Township. Many families in the area, have been in this area for generations. Many people earned their living or supported their families with the help of logging, trapping, hunting and fishing.

Tourism became popular in the late 19 th century when hunting parties and fisherman found their way to the few hotels, originally built to serve lumbermen. They were soon joined by family cottages, camps and lodges in welcoming vacationers brought north by the steamers of the Stoney Lake Navigation Company.  The building and construction industry is still strong in the Township today.

Social activities also centred around places of worship, the Women's Institute, 4H and athletic programs.

While the Township of North Kawartha keeps records as per Record Retention By-Law # 62/10, historical information can also be found at Trent Valley Archives.
